Old Fashioned Christmas

For a few years now I have felt drawn to implementing more of an old fashioned Christmas with homemade gifts.  This year we finally made it happen and I loved it so much!  December 23rd was the day that we chose to celebrate the old fashioned way.  We dressed up in semi formal, old fashioned attire and had a fancy candle-lit turkey dinner.

After dinner we opened the homemade gifts that we had spent the last several weeks making for each other.  The children and I had spent a lot of time watching inspiring Christmas movies while working on gifts.  Landon made a lot of wood carvings, Porter painted several watercolor paintings, Evelyn knitted a hat on the hat loom from Dan’s wool, Roxanne made a lot of random creative gifts, and I knitted a sweater for Jershon.  When the day finally arrived to present our gifts to the receivers we were all so excited because we had poured our hearts into these gifts.  I loved that.

After the gift opening part we sang some Christmas carols around the piano.  Evelyn also played the violin and the children played the piano.

Then we turned on some old fashioned polka and waltz dance music and danced in the kitchen.  We had a grand time and I look forward to continuing this tradition for many years to come.

To end the night, the put a present under the Christmas tree for Crosby.  They put their money together to buy him some train tracks for the few little trains that we had left over from when Landon was obsessed with trains as a young kid.  It was sweet to see them excitedly setting it up and anticipating Crosby’s reaction the next morning.
