Swedish Unit: Sankta Lucia Day

Yesterday was the Swedish holiday, Sankta Lucia Day. During the day, the kids and I made Lussekatter (Swedish Saffron Buns). The boys were at school for the dough making part, but they helped to shape the buns after school.

Lussekatter sure are pretty. 🙂 I was pleasantly surprised that they turned out so well since this was my first time ever making them.

Traditionally, the oldest daughter in the family is the designated Lucia and she wakes up the family in the early morning, serving her parents breakfast in bed, comprising of coffee and saffron buns. This officially launches the Christmas season.

Since it was a weekday and mornings are crazy with getting ready for school (and Jershon being at work), we decided to celebrate in the evening instead… and we had 3 Lucias. Evelyn (the oldest daughter) was the head Lucia though and she passed out the Saffron Buns to everyone. She also passed out some Swedish ginger cookies.

I wasn’t brave enough to light the candles in my crown (which was just our advent wreath/candle holder). Haha

Roxanne had some wardrobe malfunctions.  haha

For dinner, we had Swedish pancakes and Swedish rice pudding. We ate the pudding by candlelight (it was sort of a progressive dinner since the pudding took longer to bake than I had anticipated.)

We were brave and lit real candles for about 10 seconds. 🙂

It was so nice to sit and enjoy the light from the candles and the Christmas tree. We talked about how Lucia is a symbol of Christ and how we are celebrating light. We had our little evening devotional (we are talking about a name of Christ each evening during the Christmas season and singing Christmas hymns next to the tree). I love these quiet Christmas season evenings at home. 🙂

We really enjoyed celebrating Sankta Lucia and hope it becomes a tradition. It was fun to feel connected to our Swedish ancestors.
