Swedish Unit: Connecting to our Ancestors

Even though we did some Swedish Christmas traditions throughout December, this morning we had our first official lesson for our Swedish Unit. I gave a brief overview of some of the activities that we are going to do and a few of the ancestors that we are going to learn more about, throughout this unit.

We watched a neat video about the sounds of Sweden by Jonna Jinton.

And then we talked about why we are doing this unit. Sure, Sweden is a cool place and it will be neat to learn about the geography, landscape, and culture. But the main reason that we are taking the time to do this unit is for us to learn about and remember our Swedish ancestors.

I read the kids this quote… “There are three deaths. The first is when the body ceases to function. The second is when the body is consigned to the grave. The third is that moment, sometime in the future, when your name is spoken for the last time.” (David Eagleman)… we listened to the song, “Remember Me” (from the movie, Coco), and talked about how it’s important to remember our ancestors and get to know them.

As extended family members, we are all linked together and getting to know one another enriches all of our lives. The Spirit of Elijah is real and it is powerful.

“Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.” (Malachi 4:5-6)
