We spent about a week doing our Pioneer Unit this year. The children and I re-arranged the schoolroom a bit to make it into a log cabin and that became the home base and springboard for our unit.
We learned about my 3rd great-grandmother, Caron Happuch Holladay and her family and how they joined the church and then traveled west to join the rest of the saints in the Salt Lake valley.
A lot of our unit was driven by the children. They loved playing pioneers everyday in our “log cabin.” It was fun for me to just watch them take the reins and enjoy learning through play.
We also collected some bachelor button flowers from the garden and boiled them to extract the dye so we could dye some wool.
