Pioneer Unit 2022

We temporarily turned half of the shed into a mini log cabin.  I loved creating it so much.  In my dream world we would have a real log cabing tucked into a little patch of forest on our land.

We hosted a pioneer activity for several other Well-Educated Heart homeschool families because 1800’s expansion was one of the rotation topics for March and we love the Pioneers.  This year was our 5th year doing a pioneer unit and it makes me emotional every time I think about it because the Pioneer unit that we did in 2018 was the beginning of a lot of exciting changes for our family.

The activities included playing in the log cabin, pioneer games, doing laundry, and dipping beeswax candles.

The kids each read (or listened to) Farmer Boy (by Laura Ingalls Wilder) so we decided to have a Farmer Boy themed dinner in our Log Cabin.  We ate foods that were mentioned in the book: roast potatoes, apples & onions, and donuts.  We had some pioneer era music playing in the background and it was so fun to eat in our pretend cabin and pretend like we lived in the 1800s.
