Island Roxanne

I wrote this poem about Roxanne and made this little video in Hawaii. Sums her up pretty well…

Island Roxanne

Roxanne is off all by herself;
We wonder where she went.
Peek through the window just to see,
That girl in her element.

She’s wandering about the yard,
Noticing it all.
Nature is her happy place,
Answering creation’s call.

No flower escapes her eye;
She has to pick just one.
Making bouquets is her joy,
Always gifts them to someone.

Singing to her heart’s content,
That girl’s just like the birds.
She can’t contain her teeming joy,
It all comes out in musical words.

Wake up early, walk the beach,
Collecting shells along the shore,
So many shells, can’t narrow down,
Her bag is full but still wants more.

Seaweed sneaks into her bag,
I ask her why it’s there,
‘Because it is so beautiful’
This shows how much she cares.

She sees beauty in all things,
All things are useful too.
Imagination overflows,
Palm tree bark is her canoe.

Roxanne and nature are best friends;
She has to soak it in.
It soothes, uplifts, and satisfies;
Speaks to her soul within.

Towards the end of the Hawaii trip she kept telling me how torn she was about leaving: “Half of me wants to stay in Hawaii. What if we could combine Kansas and Hawaii?!”
