Sheep Unit: Shepherds

We’ve been doing our Sheep Unit for a little over a week now and we have really been enjoying learning about sheep and shepherds. We are coming at this unit from a couple of angles: Jesus Christ as the Good Shepherd, and learning how to be (future) good shepherds ourselves to literal sheep.

As far as learning about being a future shepherd, we have been dipping our toes in a bunch of books and learning basic facts about sheep as well as how to care for them, what breed(s) we might want to get, etc. I have some other hands on learning activities planned as well.

For the spiritual side of things, we have been slowly working our way through Psalm 23 and learning about Jesus Christ as The Good Shepherd and all of the rich symbolism that is contained in David’s poem. It has been super interesting and enlightening so far.

We’ve been drawing mostly from this book, A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23, by W. Phillip Keller, and this essay by Donna B. Nielsen. Both resources are fascinating and we are enjoying the learning process. :). I will be sharing little bits about what we are learning.
