Swedish Unit: Miscellaneous

Here are some miscellaneous photos and videos and thoughts from our Swedish Unit.  I will continue to add to this post throughout the rest of the unit.

December 29th: Little Swedish girl. Up-cycled a thrifted baby dress and made it into this little Swedish style dress for Roxanne. 🙂 I don’t even know for sure if this is even Swedish or not, but it makes me think of Sweden so I’m going with it. Haha.

I have been wanting a Scandinavian sweater ever since we went to Iceland in September. So when my mom asked me what I wanted for Christmas, I told her. 🙂 I found a couple on Ebay and Etsy and those are what my mom bought me for Christmas. 🙂 I was specifically looking for one from Sweden, but didn’t have much luck finding one, so these are technically from Norway. I’m sure the ones in Sweden are very similar though… and I’m 10% Norwegian as well anyway. 🙂 On Christmas day, my sister, Jenna, crown braided my hair and I just felt so Swedish all day. 🙂

This is the read aloud we are using for our unit. The kids think its hilarious. 🙂

January 23rd: Roxanne loves to talk about “Bo-fil-da (Bothilda) and Sin Sin-sin (Swen Swenson)” This morning she was talking about how she liked the music that we were listening to because “it we-minds (reminds) me of Bo-fil-da”. She also kept talking about how Oh-waf (Olof) Monson was going to baptize her doll. 🙂

January 24th: I have recently developed the dream to own a sheep (or 2 or 3) someday. And I want to name one of them Thilda. 🙂 I think this fascination with sheep started when we were in Iceland last September (which this photo is from). And then the dream has just become even greater since spending so much time carding wool, spinning yarn, and knitting hats over the past few weeks. My hands smell like sheep a lot these days. Haha. This dream is getting so strong that it is affecting my night time dreams. Haha. I have had at least 3 or 4 dreams about owning a sheep over the past week or so. Some of the dreams are a little weird. Like last nights… people were holding a bunch of lambs… but they looked like really furry newborn humans. ?

Roxanne is getting pretty good at the Swedish alphabet song! She sings it randomly a lot these days and it’s adorable. 🙂

January 26th: Let’s take a minute to admire this amazing sweater that my friend, Ashley, knitted for me! I am in awe at her skills. She not only did the knitting part, but she also spun the yarn, dyed the blue and purple yarn (the gray is the natural color), and created the design. She was so nice to offer to knit me a sweater and she did the whole thing (from wool to complete sweater) in just over 2 weeks! I am so impressed with her skills. Plus, she owns sheep. So I want to be like her even more. 🙂 Ashley also has some Swedish heritage and we were visiting teaching companions in Iowa when both of our husbands were in graduate school.

January 28th: Attempted some “crown braids”… I cheated and did a crown twist instead of an actual braid. Someday I will learn to do the real crown braid. 🙂
