Pioneer Unit 2019: Day 5

Harriet Matilda Casper was only 5 years old when she made the trek with her family from the Midwest to the Salt Lake Valley. She remembers that her mother was very ill during the journey.

Evelyn chose to represent Harriet this year because she is five years old, just like Harriet was when she made the trek across the plains.

Today we did some things that Harriet, and other pioneer children, probably did. The girls made some rag dolls and the boys did some whittling.

We also played some pioneer games like dropping clothes pins into jars, “button, button, who’s got the button,” and burlap sack races.

Then Harriet and her family continued on their journey. They carried her ill mother, Matilda (Roxanne), in the wagon.
