God Gives Good Gifts: Post 2

My parents have a creek that runs through their 40 acres in Missouri. While we were at their house a couple weeks ago, we spent a lot of time down by the creek… working on building a clay oven and making bricks just for fun. 🙂

On the first day that we were there, I happened to just be standing there at one point and I looked down at the ground, bent down, picked up a “rock” without really thinking anything of it. I looked at it in my hand, and still without really thinking, I said “that’s an arrowhead.” (I learned later from my parents’ friend that it is actually a spearhead.)

When it finally registered in my brain (haha… actually only took a few seconds) that I had just found an arrowhead… a rather large one at that… I was pretty excited! I am pretty sure that we have found a few arrowheads (or pieces of them) down at our creek before, but I had never found one personally… and I wasn’t sure if we had ever found one as nice and complete, and big as this one.

I decided to walk down the creek a bit to another one of the sandbars and on that sandbar, I stooped down and found a button looking thing. It looks like it was made out of a shell. Maybe it was part of a necklace or a bracelet? (My parents’ friend looks like it may have been from the late 1800s).

On this same sandbar, I also found another arrowhead… or at least I’m pretty sure it is an an arrowhead… the shape isn’t as obvious and complete and its been smoothed out overtime by the water, but it appears to me that it probably was an arrowhead at one time.

I then went back to the first sandbar where Jershon was making the clay oven and I found another one of the shell button things. So crazy!

It’s not everyday that you find artifacts like these and it was so cool! It’s so neat to find things that have been left behind from people that lived in the past.

I recently learned that Missouri is named after the indigenous Missouri Indians, a Siouan-language tribe. It comes from the tribal name Missouria, which means “big canoe people.”
