Fika Friday: The Netherlands

We are following along with the Well-Educated Heart rotation for our homeschool. This month, one of the countries that we are learning about is the Netherlands. Today for Fika Friday, we had a Netherlands theme. We listened to folk music, ate stroopwafels and Gouda cheese (along with crackers, apples, and apple juice). We read some short stories and poems about the Netherlands and looked at some paintings.

We also learned about an ancestor of ours that was born in the Netherlands. As far as I can tell from what I read, his parents were from England but they came with the Pilgrims to Leyden, Holland and it was during their time there (before coming to America) that this ancestor of mine was born.

Before Fika, we watched a video about the Netherlands and made toilet paper roll windmills. 🙂

By the way, I can’t recommend Well-Educated Heart enough, even if you don’t officially homeschool. It is filled with beauty and nourishment for the soul.
