Fika Friday: Anne of Green Gables

Last January, we read Anne of Green Gables and then watched the 1985 version of the movie.  We all loved both the book and the movie, but Roxanne especially.  She has been quite enamored with Anne of Green Gables for the past year.

So for Christmas, Santa brought her a dress with puffed sleeves and a straw hat. She has been wearing this outfit nearly everyday since then… only taking a break from the dress if it’s being washed.

This week for Fika, we decided to have an Anne of Green Gables theme.  Roxanne has been super excited about this and made sure that we included several foods from the book.

We made Raspberry Cordial (not to be confused with Currant Wine), Anne’s Vanilla Layer Cake (no liniment), Marilla’s Plum Pudding with Carmel Sauce (luckily no drowned mouse this time), homemade bread, homemade jam and carrots (no slates were smashed on anyone’s head).

Of course we had to dress up and represent the characters.  Roxanne also insisted that Jershon grow out his mustache so he could be Matthew.  haha.

Bosom friends. Anne and Diana
His mustache was coming in nicely but we helped it along with a bit of makeup to fill it in some more. haha.
Matthew and Anne. Roxanne was a little apprehensive about the full mustache.

Anne (Roxanne), Diana (Evelyn), Gilbert Blythe (Landon), Moody Spurgeon (Porter), Matthew (Jershon), and Marilla (me)

The food turned out great and it was all delicious.

We also listened to music from the Anne of Green Gables movie and read some of the poem, The Lady of Shalott by Alfred Tennyson since acting out that poem is what resulted in Anne sinking on a raft and having to be rescued by Gilbert.

I was obsessed with Anne of Green Gables when I was younger! This is such a cute idea and I love that you incorporated the food!

For some reason I never read Anne of Green Gables when I was a kid. I wish I would have! But I’m glad that I get to share it with my kids now. 🙂
