10 Years Since We Met

May 15, 2008.

I ran out of clean underwear so I decided that I better do my laundry. I walked over to the laundry room in my apartment complex (which happened to be next to the pool), put my laundry in the washer, and then decided to sit next to the pool and write in my journal while I waited for my laundry.

This guy happened to be there, checking his mail, and we said a quick “hi” to each other in passing. He walked over to the pool, which was mostly empty, saw the hose in it and casually asked “is that how they are gonna fill it up?” I just smiled and said that I didn’t know. Didn’t think anything of it.

Interestingly, the pool was closed again… only it wasn’t empty this time. 🙂

He went in his apartment and I kept writing. A few minutes later, that same guy came out of his apartment with his roommate and tried to skateboard in the mostly empty pool. Didn’t go so well so he gave up. Haha.

He picked up his dinner that he had brought out, a bowl of “mac n’ tom” (elbow macaroni with stewed tomatoes).

He offered some to me but I declined. And then he sat down next to me and we just started chatting.

We ended up talking for an hour. He even stayed out there and waited for me while I switched my laundry. After we had talked for quite a while, we both stood up to leave. He asked me for my phone number and then said “I know that we just barely met, but do you want to go on a date on Saturday night?”

I agreed and from then on, he kept asking me out every week after that. And the rest is history.

And now here we are, May 15th, 2018. The ten year anniversary of when we met.

Tonight, we went to that same pool, brought a picnic dinner of mac n’ tom and reminisced about that serendipitous day.
